In the grad program I already went from an acting AO4 to a permanent AO5 in just over a year of being here. If you put in the work it won't go unnoticed.

Government is an equal opportunity employer. People are comfortable to be who they are, and I have noticed everyone being very inclusive with one another. They provide graduate programs and internships. Some of these for less privileged backgrounds.

Just over a year into grad program I got an information security specialist (ao5) role. working in cyber security operations, my day looks something like this: work with frontline officers or other internal teams to troubleshoot/diagnose network issues (Use enterprise firewalls, web proxies and email gateways, Splunk), work on exciting projects like firewall replacements or implementing new enterprise tools, vulnerability scanning and Incident Response (reverse engineering malware, analysing logs for potential compromise, or working with internal staff who report incidents)

Dress code is business casual, but many people hold themselves to a higher standard and are very professional. The buildings I've been in are generally well maintained and equipped, with decent kitchens. Most also have end-of-trip facilities and have been close to major train stations and bus interchanges.

Situational and behavioural type questions. Just show that you're interested, highly motivated, keen to put in the effort. Create a pitch for yourself, so you can tell them who you are, your interests etc. It's a professional way to start an interview. Practise STAR responses for general behavioural questions and cement the answers in your head so when asked, you can fluently talk about it.

Pay is probably a bit below the equivalent in the private sector, however flexible working, additional Super and workplace culture go some way to making it up. Government pays higher than standard to superannuation. It is good.

Graduate training covered many aspects of the job and skills that may be useful (Human Centered Design, skills for interviewing, writing & presenting, etc.). My team provided me with training for the systems they maintain, as well as offering AWS certifications.

As long as you do your hours, it's very flexible. If you leave early, make up for it another time, no problem. It's amazing place to work in regards to work hours.

DAF and the IT partnership are all departments relating to the environment, agriculture and biosecurity, so there are a lot of policies in place to reduce waste and reduce out environmental footprint.
