Culture at Queensland Rail

8.2
8.2 rating for Culture, based on 6 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
I commenced my tenure in a rotational-based graduate program and have had the opportunity to rotate in multiple departments in the organisation. I can say that the culture is slightly different from team to team. Some teams have a very strong social culture while others not so much. However, what they all have in common is strong organisational values and deep sense of respect for one another and ensuring that everyone feels like they belong.

The culture can vary between different parts of the business but in my area we have flexible working arrangements (working from home 40% of the time). We work our 8am-4pm hours and are not expected or encouraged to work overtime - which means great work-life balance! The people are great, supportive and want you to take every development opportunity relevant to our roles. The communication between teams within QR can vary as there are many people who love to talk about what they do, are super passionate and helpful and then there are some teams that are really difficult to communicate with. Sometimes we struggle with silos within the organisation. I report up to a team leader, who reports to their manager, who reports to the senior manager, who reports to the CFO, who reports to the CEO.

As with any company, there are times when everyone is pushing hard to meet deadlines, but for the most part, the co-workers are always open to answering questions and providing support to graduates and other colleagues. This is a reflection of the 1Team values where everyone tries to do their bit to help achieve the overall company goal.

Each team is different in terms of dynamics but from my experience, all the teams I have worked closely with have been friendly and supportive inside the office and after hours. In terms of upper management, I find that there are a lot of politics around people's positions and what is achieved by the ELT. Often this isn't filtered down.
