The Story of Nissan Australia

Nissan started its business in 1911 and built its first Datsun car in 1914 for the Japanese market. Headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, it manages the operations in six regions: China; Asia & Oceania; Europe; Africa, the Middle East & India; North America; and Latin America.

In 1999, the Nissan-Renault alliance was formed and has gained a significant presence in major world markets. In 2016, the alliance acquired a 34% stake in Mitsubishi Motors, and Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi became the world’s largest automotive partnership today.

Nissan Australia was founded in 1972, and it manufactured cars for 20 years. Automobile production in Australia ended in 1992. It is today the only remaining Original Equipment Manufacturer that still produces automotive components via a casting plant in suburban Dandenong, Victoria. The parts are distributed to Nissan-Renault vehicle assembly plants and supply companies around the world.

On September 30, 2020, after more than 40 years in Dandenong, Nissan Australia shifted its national headquarters to Mulgrave. It became the home for sales, marketing, and customer service departments, as well as technical training, financial services, and the Victorian regional office. Thus, Nissan Australia as a whole consists of Nissan Motor Co. Australia (NMA), Nissan Financial Services Australia (NFSA), and Nissan Casting Australia (NCAP).

Culture & vibe

The company is a good place for fresh graduates to gain new skills and learn new knowledge in the motor industry, where cooperativeness and safety are really important. All training is provided, and you can learn how to work with or manage a big team.

If your work is customer-related, your work day may include the presentation of cars, carting customers to and from the car yard in a safe manner, making sure that all prospects are followed up, all new inquiries (via phone or walk-in) are answered, proper follow-up is done, and all customers who are waiting for their new car to be delivered are updated.

Another area of work can consist of exchanging data, coordinating daily activities, or making necessary arrangements for delivering/shipping spare parts and vehicles. Sometimes you may also deal with cross-functional departments within the company, such as financial, sales, after-sales services, internal audit, etc.

Depending on your role, you may also have more experience working in a multicultural environment, dealing with foreign partners, interpreting the local trade regulations with them, or coordinating the clearance of goods from customs. Several insiders described that the hardest part of their job is dealing with regulations.

Recruitment process

The Career page on Nissan Australia’s website has all you need to know about applying for the role you are interested in. It has the link to join their talent community and the link where you can browse all jobs, along with tips for interviews and the details of the recruitment process.

Some of the current vacant roles are Asset Management & Complex Collections Officer, Business Analyst (contract) - Nissan Financial Services Australia, and Collections Officer (contract).

Your application should consist of a cover letter addressing the selection criteria, a CV detailing your work history, and a relevant copy of your qualifications. The application will be reviewed and forwarded to the Nissan Talent Team.

Before an offer of employment is given, all candidates are required to undertake relevant background checks and provide evidence of eligibility to work in the country. Once the offer of employment is accepted (by returning the signed contract), you will undergo an onboarding phase to gain knowledge of how Nissan operates.
