I love the satisfaction of completing each payment run and the adrenaline after getting all payments signed off before the payment cut-off time.

What's your job about?

The Junior Accounts Payable Officer job position falls under the operations division, and more specifically, within the internal finance team. Within this role, I am responsible for assisting the Financial Controller by ensuring all creditors and payment entries are processed in a timely manner.

My primary, day-to-day duties include entering invoices, completing payment runs, reconciling accounts, communicating with creditors and actioning disbursements. MYOB, a leading accounting software, is an essential tool for undertaking and completing these tasks.

I work tightly with the entire internal finance team, which consists of myself and 6 others. We recently introduced weekly team meetings to discuss our current and upcoming projects.

What's your background?

I have grown up in Sydney but have also spent a lot of time in New Zealand as it is where my family is from. My educational journey began and flourished at Redlands, where I spent my entire school life, culminating in the challenging yet rewarding International Baccalaureate program during my final two years.

Currently, I am navigating my second year at the University of Sydney, where I am studying a double degree, a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Advanced Studies with majors in Finance and Professional Accounting.

Prior to joining Nexia, I had completed work experience at one of the Big Four accounting firms and had previous jobs in hospitality, retail and sports coaching.

Upon starting university, I applied for a position in the sub-committee of SUBS (Sydney University Business Society). I was fortunate enough to be offered a role in the Internal and Alumni portfolio, and it was through a networking event my portfolio hosted that I found out about Nexia and applied for the job.

I began working at Nexia full-time for 3 months over university break but have spent the last month working part-time so that I can balance full-time study as well.

Beyond work and study, I spend most of my free time outdoors exercising, or catching up with friends.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

I believe that the below core attributes and competencies are essential for excelling in my role:

  • A solid educational foundation in business, complemented by a genuine interest in accounting or finance.
  • Enthusiasm for unravelling complex problems through critical thinking.
  • An intrinsic motivation and proactive mindset, coupled with an eagerness to embrace new learning opportunities.
  • A high attention to detail, ensuring precision in every task.

So yes, I think someone with a different background could do my job provided embody these fundamental qualities.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Given that this is my first corporate job, everything, even the small stuff, excites me! From coming into the city every day to having my own desk opposite the Managing Partner to having meetings and a full inbox, I love it. Working in operations has made it easy to get to know everyone and understand the logistics of running a functioning, successful company.

Specifically, within my job position, I love the satisfaction of completing each payment run and the adrenaline after getting all payments signed off before the payment cut-off time.

What are the limitations of your job?

Considering the nature of accounting, it is expected that the work can be repetitive at times. However, this is what allows you to become more efficient at completing each task.

Moreover, as previously mentioned, my job requires a high attention to detail and presents limited opportunities to apply a creative mindset. This is not problematic for myself as I am a logical thinker.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

Given that I am still a university student, here’s 3 pieces of advice I still tell myself:

  • Go for it – be eager, put yourself out there and dream big.
  • Prioritize. At times, you will have to make sacrifices, so you must know what is most important to you and your ambitions.
  • Everyone’s journey is different - don’t worry if someone is one step ahead or going in a different direction.
