What does an Underwriter do?

As an underwriter, youโ€™ll analyse risk and determine the terms of insurance coverage. Youโ€™ll assess applications, review data, and decide on appropriate premiums. 

Youโ€™ll work with a diverse range of risks and industries, from small businesses to large corporations, with opportunities to specialise in areas that interest you. No two days are ever the same in underwriting!

What does your day-to-day look like?

  • Risk assessment: Analyse client applications, financial data, and market trends to assess risks.
  • Decision-making: Determine insurance terms, including coverage limits and premiums.
  • Client and broker communication: Collaborate with brokers and clients to gather information and explain decisions.
  • Market research: Stay informed about trends, regulations, and emerging risks in the industry.
  • Professional development: Participate in training sessions and pursue further studies, such as ANZIIF or CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) accreditation.

Weโ€™re looking for someone who has:

  • Degree qualifications within the past three years in Business, Finance, Commerce, Economics, Actuarial Studies, or related disciplines. However, if youโ€™ve studied something else, weโ€™d still love to hear from you!
  • AUS/NZ Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident status
  • Strong analytical skills to assess data and make informed decisions
  • Attention to detail to evaluate complex applications
  • Eagerness to learn and a passion for the insurance industry

Register claims and draft reports for adjusters. Also do a bit of admin work such as issuing invoices and keep the claim up to date in the system.

  • The People - Everyone is super nice. Being Independent - I get left alone to do my work and not helicoptered the whole day.

  • Good working culture and everyone is willing to help out when I have trouble.

  • The people at my company are super friendly and the culture is good. I like the fish tank in the office

  • Career progression, work-life balance.

  • Great people, great clients, always room to move forward

Cons

    • Pay is a little low.

    • Irregular workload - can get really hectic at times but then I have no work at other times.

    • Traffic can sometimes be annoying. But my company is hardly to blame for that!

    • I can think of nothing negative.

    • When I am away from the fish tank. :(
