You may be wondering how your degree fits with the insurance industry

Although you can’t go to uni and get a degree in insurance, there is still a wealth of opportunities for career growth in the industry. As seasoned professionals retire over the next decade, endless promotion and advancement possibilities will open up. That you do not need a degree to advance into.

While an insurance degree may not be necessary, many similar degrees offer transferable skills and knowledge that can lay the groundwork for a successful career in insurance. Below, we've outlined how your degree can be applied in the insurance industry.

  • Finance: Finance degrees are ideal for the insurance industry due to their focus on financial analysis and risk management. This knowledge is crucial for insurance companies to calculate premiums and assess financial risk while remaining financially secure.
  • Business: A degree in business is perfect for the insurance industry because it provides a strong foundation in core business concepts such as accounting, economics, marketing, and management. These skills are essential in the insurance industry where professionals need to understand financial statements, analyse market trends, develop marketing strategies, and manage client relationships.
  • Accounting: A degree in accounting is beneficial for the insurance industry because insurance companies need accurate financial reporting to comply with regulations and to make informed business decisions. Accountants play a crucial role in preparing financial statements, assessing risk, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
  • Economics: Economics is another great fit for the insurance industry as the coursework covers topics such as micro and macroeconomic theory, financial modelling, and statistical analysis, all of which are valuable skills for insurance professionals. Economics graduates are trained to think critically and solve complex problems, which is essential in an industry where risk assessment and management are critical.
  • Actuarial Science: A degree in Actuarial Science is particularly beneficial for a career in insurance because it provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to evaluate and manage risk. Actuaries use advanced statistical techniques to analyse data and predict future events, such as the likelihood of an insurance claim being filed. This helps insurance companies determine the appropriate premiums to charge and ensure they have adequate reserves to cover potential losses.
