Training & Personal Development at Department of Transport and Main Roads

8.2
8.2 rating for Training, based on 31 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
I had the mandatory training in the first few days but since then, I have complete external workshops, webinars, certificates and self-pace courses as well as teaching myself how to use certain software programs. Audit is very much turning the theory from university into the practical but really, I had to relearn it to complete audits to TMR standards which is much more. TMR loves the culture of sharing knowledge too. When my team does a webinar of finds out something, we sometimes share it with the rest of the team.

The graduate program is amazing with 2 development weeks every year. I also just had the opportunity to attend the RoadTek leaders forum which gave me a great networking opportunity and gave me some leadership skills as well.

As part of graduate program I have been provided with week-long training an development programs. These programs have been based around influencing and understanding emotions, building mental resilience and negotiation and conflict

Training is self-paced and easily accessible, which is a style that works for me. Employees are encouraged to spend as much time as they deem reasonable to access training, provided it doesn't dramatically interfere with their work. Training resources are provided and external training is easily approved. The graduate program in particular blocks out two weeks a year for dedicated training time, along with the odd day here and there of online training. Through formal training, I have learned job speci?c technical skills, collaboration and communication skills (including presentation), negotiation skills, and general leadership skills.

Formal training opportunities like Walking and Cycling Masterclasses are of a very high quality. The graduate program provides great opportunities to learn and to experience a wide variety of work across the department, though is lacking some formal structure.

There is a broad range of training programs to develop your skills. In procurement, I've learnt about the contract management and procurement processes, risk identification on future activities and how to mitigate those risks. There are networking events where you get to meet people who've been with TMR for a long time that you can gather their insights on what you could learn. I've learnt from networking, 'Tell a story'.

In my case, formal training wasn't part of the equation; instead, I underwent on-the-job training, which, truth be told, can be quite overwhelming at times. The learning curve was steep, but through hands-on experience, I've honed skills in project management, effective communication, and problem-solving. The practical nature of the training has been both challenging and rewarding, contributing significantly to my professional growth.

Formal training was good, informal training was good and I feel will pick up when I start full time, but I am at a stage where I don't know alot.

We have Graduate Huddle twice a year in Brisbane, where We meet with other Graduate across from different roles. This helps us to develop professionally and personally through various training provided during huddle. Similarly, I have also attended lots of technical training related to my roles and disciplines. for example, as civil engineer myself, I had the opportunity to attend Road Construction training, Road Geometric design, Spray sealing and selection etc.

The training and development at TMR is highly dependant on the local business area and their willingness to allow graduates to attend training in conjunction with their regular duties.

The department supports performance training and skill development through the online training portal via Accelerate or any in-person training centre such as pavement design, Road design, and temporary traffic management courses.

I would highly rate the on the job training that I have been provided. I have been exposed to a range of interesting and challenging work, but have been supported along the way by my manager and team. I have also been supported to undertake more formal training which has been highly relevant to my role. When I began in my role, I created a development agreement with my manager, and we review this regularly.

The graduate program within TMR is outstanding. It has led to many important networking connections, negotiation skills, and other soft skills. Training is readily available - Accelerate (internal learning management system) and LinkedIn Learning have thousands of courses that can be used to learn or enhance skills.
