The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) supports the functions of the Australian Parliament and the work of parliamentarians through the provision of professional services, advice and facilities. DPS is also responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the Australian Parliament House to ensure the building, and the important activity that takes place within it is accessible.

The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) provides the following services to Parliament and Australian Parliament House:

Every year, almost one million people visit Australian Parliament House to experience the parliamentary process, the building's architecture, nationally significant art collections, events, tours, and food and dining experiences – all made possible by our people, who are active participants in an environment where no two days are the same.

Recruitment Process

Stage One – Application Submission

Applicants must upload in one attachment their resume, academic transcript and a two-page pitch.

The two-page pitch must answer the following three questions in no more than 1000 words:

  • Why you are interested in the 2022 DPS Graduate Program, and what skills and experience you can bring to the program.
  • Provide an example of when you have had to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Describe a situation where you used innovative thinking to solve a difficult problem.


Stage two – Assessment Centre

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an assessment centre in September 2021 at Australian Parliament House or virtually if required.

The assessment centre will involve several activities designed to further evaluate applicants' skills and capabilities. This will involve, a behavioral interview, group activity, and written assessment.


Stage three – Reference Check

Applicants who are considered suitable after the assessment centre will have two referee reports obtained from a current or previous supervisor in a work or university capacity.


Stage four – Letter of Offer and Commencement

Offers will commence in November 2021, with a view to commence the program February 2022.

Successful applicants will be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including a health clearance and a nationally coordinated criminal history check, before commencing with the department.

The department is located in Canberra at Australian Parliament House. Successful applicants from interstate will be eligible for relocation support.

Remuneration & Career Growth

Our graduates are employed at the Parliamentary Service Level 3 (PSL3) classification and receive an annual salary of $66,799 + 15.4% superannuation.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are broadbanded to the Parliamentary Service Level 4 (PSL4) classification.
