The best thing about my job is that every day is different with my tasks varying depending on the stage of the project.

What's your job about?

Struxture are an independently-owned construction company with projects across Australia and New Zealand.

The best thing about my job is that every day is different with my tasks varying depending on the stage of the project.

In my time on the Construction Services team, I have had tasks varying from contract administration, such as managing costs, report writing, issuing RFI’s, preparing contracts and attending and writing minutes from meetings with the client/subcontractors.

I have also assisted in developing a scope of work, and procuring and scheduling trade contractors to conduct the required works onsite. Once onsite, I have experience in managing the trades to ensure they are doing the work as agreed and to ensure the WHSE frameworks are being adhered to.

My role has also involved post completion activities such as defect recording and resolution, obtaining relevant close-out documentation from subcontractors and closing out costs management tasks such as releasing retentions held.

What's your background?

I grew up in South East Victoria and completed VCE at Rowville Secondary College, I then went on to study at Deakin University (Burwood Campus). During my university degree, I had the chance to study at Aarhus University in Denmark which I highly recommend to anyone who gets a chance, it was great to experience living away from home in another country where the people have a different way of life to that in Australia.

I got this position by applying online after meeting Struxture representatives at a graduate fair at my university. I was attracted to the job due to the interesting and complex nature of the projects that we work on.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes. The key skill that is required in Construction Services is your communication skills. Every day you are on the phone dealing with and managing people from external organisations making it extremely important to be able to convey the information required to complete each task. The rest of the skills required can be learned if you are hardworking and are interested in learning new things to grow as a professional.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

One of the most interesting parts of the job is the variety of exciting projects we work on at Struxture. In my first year, I worked on projects in the health, research, food and agriculture sectors. With each project presents unique challenges and learning opportunities.

What are the limitations of your job?

The biggest limitation is that I have had to travel long distances and live away from home at times as we have some projects based in regional Victoria.
