Ajay M Menon

I have been with Genpact for almost a month, and it’s been a good learning journey for me. The coolest thing for me was that I got into a project just after few days of onboarding and got access to live data.

What's your job about?

I work in the Financial Crime Risk Management Department as a Data Analyst. I bring out valuable data insights for different workstreams within the company, from raw data.

My role also includes handling various data workstreams end-to-end, driving strategic, elegant approaches for banking decisions, and customer outcomes. Perform various ad-hoc analysis geared towards improving data assets, strategies and increasing overall profit. It’s been around 1 month since I have joined Genpact, and it’s been a good ride so far.

What's your background?

I did my bachelor’s in computer science in India after which I worked for 2 years as a Data Analyst with Robert Bosch. I came to Australia to pursue master’s in data science at Monash University. I was also working part-time as a Data engineer while doing my masters. My 4 favourite words are learning, data, scale, and agility. All my experience and skillsets have revolved around handling data in various processes. I am a very passionate data enthusiast and love deriving insights from raw and complex datasets. The industrial experience that I had and the skillsets I developed during my masters in the domain of Data Science helped me a lot in landing this job.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, they could. If they are eager to dive in and learn new things, that is more important in being successful in this role. You will also need to have good communication skills to be successful.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I get to work on really challenging projects for big clients. I have been with Genpact for almost a month, and it’s been a good learning journey for me. The coolest thing for me was that I got into a project just after few days of onboarding and got access to live data. I have been using various analytical tools like Microsoft PowerBI and Excel and providing valuable insights to the customers which in return helps me upskill regularly.

What are the limitations of your job?

I was a bit overwhelmed initially since I started working on a project just after a few days of my onboarding. Since you will get to attend meetings with people from different parts of the world, you will have to accommodate different time zones.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Always try to make time for yourself, it is important to introspect as well as explore your options, and have a little fun while you’re at it. Do not let go of your hobbies and keep doing what you love.
  2. Talk and interact with as many people as possible, build networks and professional connections via LinkedIn. Join clubs, volunteer, and don’t let any opportunity pass you by.
  3. Be true to yourself. Just believe in yourself and don’t give up on something you truly trust.
