About Energy Queensland - Ergon Energy Network | Energex

Energy Queensland is the group of electricity distribution, retail and energy services businesses 100% owned by the state of Queensland. As a Government Owned Corporation, we deliver electricity across Queensland through our ‘poles and wires’ businesses Energex and Ergon Energy Network.

Our retailer, Ergon Energy Retail sells this electricity to customers throughout regional Queensland. These essential service activities are also supported by a range of innovative products and services delivered through our Yurika brand.

Energy Queensland already has a highly skilled electrical engineering workforce, and the annual Future of Energy Engineering Scholarships will help to grow that to ensure Queensland has some of the best trained electrical engineers anywhere in the world.

Our organisation is at the forefront of embracing new technology, new ideas, alternative energy solutions and smart grid technology. We are building the network of the future to power Queensland's economy. We are an energy business that seeks to build strong connections and have a positive presence in the communities we serve.

Future of Energy Engineering Scholarships

Scholarship value

30-35 x $20,000 scholarships will be maintained each year covering students in their second year of study through to final year students.

Successful scholarship recipients will receive $20,000 per academic year towards their studies.

Who should apply

Our primary focus for the scholarship will be Electrical Engineering students. The majority of the scholarships will be awarded to electrical/ electronic degrees and therefore our efforts will target the seven QLD universities with Electrical Engineering faculties.

Dual / double-degree Electrical Engineers are particularly valued and will be viewed favourably. Integrated Bachelor's and Masters Degree's are eligible.

However, we also recognise that it takes a team to undertake a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform Queensland and deliver our "Electric Life" mission by 2030. Therefore, we will be offering a number of scholarships to complimentary engineering disciplines (could be single or double) including Mechatronic, Mechanical, Civil / Structural Engineers who are wanting to make an impact in the power industry.

Our commitment to all of Queensland and its Diversity

Our intention is to spread the scholarships evenly across regional Queensland and South East Queensland.

We are targeting the seven QLD Universities with electrical engineering faculties which are defined a Regional or SE QLD below:

Regional:

  • James Cook University (JCU) (Townsville / Cairns)
  • Central Queensland University (CQU) (Bundaberg, Cairns, Gladstone, Mackay, Rockhampton)
  • University of Southern Queensland (USQ) (Toowoomba/ Springfield)

South East Queensland

  • Uni of Sunshine Coast (Moreton Bay Campus - Petrie)
  • QUT (Gardens Point)
  • UQ (St Lucia)
  • Griffith (Nathan / Gold Coast)

We will be considering diversity of applicants to ensure our future workforce is a reflective of the communities in which we operate. First nations and Women who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply.

Vacation work - earn while you learn

Scholarship recipients would participate in paid work opportunities giving you valuable experience working and collaborating with experts in new and emerging technologies that support Australia’s largest electricity network – designing and building the infrastructure for the influx of renewable energy, electric vehicles and energy storage.

This work experience would typically be completed in the university semester breaks and contribute towards any compulsory work placement your degree requires.

Opportunities for work could in one of Energy Queensland’s distribution network businesses – Ergon Energy and Energex – or its energy solutions business Yurika.

These vacation placements can take place across a wide range of locations across Queensland including:

  • Cairns
  • Townsville
  • Mackay
  • Rockhampton
  • Toowoomba
  • Brisbane and surrounds

Graduate Opportunities

On the completion of your degree, the experience you would have gained with us would position you well for graduate opportunities in one of Energy Queensland’s businesses. Similar to our vacation placements, this could be in the distribution network businesses – Ergon Energy and Energex – or our innovative energy solutions business Yurika and based at a range of locations.

Our highly sought-after Graduate Programs offer mentors, and rotations to broaden your experiences, learning and development while working alongside experts and new and emerging technologies.

My role is very satisfying as I am able to see the benefit that my work has, and I feel like the work I do is meaningful. My responsibility as a graduate is to achieve the objectives of the teams that I am in for the 6 months that I am in that team.

As a graduate my responsibilities include learning modules and workshops, and the tasks/objectives set between myself and my supervisor. There aren't many day-to-day task as my workload is often changing.

As mentioned, as a graduate who is rotating around the different departments this will more often than not come back to the supervisor I am working under. My first supervisor needs training/more training to properly engage and instruct a graduate engineer.

Pros and cons of working at Energy Queensland

Pros

  • The pay is fantastic for a graduate and well above any other companies that I am aware of.

  • Great balance of work and life having flexible start and finish times, along with a 9-day fortnight.

  • Good level of emphasis on learning and developing fundamentals prior to being thrust into just deliverables.

  • The opportunity to gain a wide variety of experience across multiple engineering teams.

  • The culture is very good in the company. Most people have the mindset to foster learning and development of themselves and others.

Cons

    • Change can be slow within the business. Due to inefficiencies in historic processes, availability of data and regulation, it can be challenging at times for progress to be made.

    • The worst thing about working for the company is the travel to the office but, there is work from home opportunities available.

    • Some work may only be available in certain locations across the state.

    • I struggle to find something to put here... No biscuits in the tea room...

    • Change can be slow within the business. Due to inefficiencies in historic processes, availability of data and regulation, it can be challenging at times for progress to be made.
