Don’t be afraid to ask and clarify with anyone at work, because learning never stops, regardless of educational background or age.

What’s your job about?

Leighton Asia is currently constructing Singapore’s first integrated transport corridor, the North-South Corridor (NSC) Contract N103 project. The NSC spans 21.5km across Singapore and will include dedicated bus lanes, cycling routes and pedestrians path.

As a Graduate Engineer and part of the construction team, I help to supervise site works to ensure the highest safety and quality standard of our works is achieved. At the start of each day, I provide an update of the planned site works and activities for the day to site supervisors for coordination. I will then conduct a site walk to have a clear understanding of the ground and to spot if anything unexpected happened.

What’s your background?

I am a true-blue Singaporean, born and bred in Singapore! I went through all stages of my education in Singapore. I have always been interested in Physics and Mathematics as I grew up, putting theories and concepts into the application. Even though these are not my best subjects, but that is how I have ended up in an engineering degree in university. Specifically, civil engineering, as I want to contribute back to society in a tangible manner. People don’t even need to know that I was a part of it!

After I graduated from university, I came across the opportunity for Leighton Asia Graduate Program online. I was attracted to the potential exposure that I would be able to receive and the chance to rotate across departments. That is why I applied for the Graduate Program and am currently in it for approximately 1 year and 9 months.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, I think that background is not the dictating factor! Being humility, having a desire to learn and perseverance are definitely factors of equal importance and significance. Don’t be afraid to ask and clarify with anyone at work, because learning never stops, regardless of educational background or age. Circumstances may not always be in our favour but embrace challenges and enjoy the journey along the way.

What’s the coolest thing about your job?

I enjoy working with other project members together as a team towards the same goal – delivering the project to the highest safety and quality standard to our client. Every department plays a key role to ensure smooth progress on site. This sense of belonging allows me to excel in my role and the accomplishment of a project milestone is being shared by everyone.

What are the limitations of your job?

Because of the nature of the construction industry, site operations carry on during weekends as well. Working six days a week sometimes make it hard to make time for some quality time with family and friends. Meanwhile, the hot and humid weather in Singapore is not the most favourable condition to work on site. The average monthly temperature can go up to around 31 degrees throughout the year.

Three pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student…

  • Enjoy the time of learning and discover more about yourself when you’re still in university!
  • Don’t be afraid to explore and take the step of faith to try. Spend time to find what your true passion is.
  • The journey of exploring your future path clearer is also a fruitful learning experience as well!
