The coolest part of my job is the exposure I get to different departments, which has given me a wider perspective on the business. Particularly, I love working on analytics projects the most!

What's your job about?

My employer is a multinational manufacturer and distributor, and within this, I am responsible for assisting the finance and IT teams.

Since I’m still finishing off my degree, I only work part time, in which I alternate between the finance and IT department! Within the finance team, I aid the team with their allocations, inboxes, processing invoices, reconciliations, and analysis. As for the IT team, I assist on a variety of projects across the business, such as data analyses, updating data within the ERP, and improving processes.

A typical day in the IT team begins with checking my inbox and preparing for upcoming meetings, then I follow up on any outstanding projects and polish it before sending it off (Looking at projects with a fresh mind always helps!). Throughout the day, I prioritise any urgent projects, followed by ongoing tasks such as monitoring the data quality in our ERP software. A typical data analytics project begins with extracting data from our ERP software into Microsoft Access. Since our data is quite sparse, I query the tables to extract the required data, and export it into excel for analysis. After data analysis, I create the visualisations using Power BI, and paste them into Canva with accompanying comments, ready to present!
The great thing about my job is the support I get! Everyone is always willing to help and offer feedback to improve my work. I believe anyone with a drive and genuine interest can do the job!

What's your background?

I grew up in Sydney and have been here throughout my whole life. I attended school in Western Sydney and I’m currently finishing off my bachelor’s degree at UNSW. Personally, business and technology have always been passions of mine, so naturally, I decided to pursue the new business analytics major!
Alongside my studies, I’m an avid volunteer and work a retail job, which I absolutely love! I love giving back to my community and being pushed out of my comfort zone.
I joined Bunzl mid-2022 and have been here for 4 months. Bunzl’s vision and operations personally attracted me, so I decided to apply! HR kept me in the loop every stage of the process and was highly responsive. Originally, the company only offered 2 streams: operations and commercial. But luckily, they extended the program to add an analytics and finance stream, which I am extremely grateful for. This attests to the company culture and investment in your personal growth.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

With the right mindset and drive, I believe anyone can do the job! The most important part of working in analytics is having good technical and communication skills. Proficiency in Excel, Access, Power BI, and SQL etc. would help, but these can be learned on the job! Additionally, Bunzl offers plenty of training opportunities to invest in your personal growth, and everyone is always willing to help. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, no matter how silly they are!

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest part of my job is the exposure I get to different departments, which has given me a wider perspective on the business. Particularly, I love working on analytics projects the most! Having to present to a variety of managers and directors, I’m required to tailor my presentations to all sorts of people. This has been challenging, but I’m grateful for the learning experience.

What are the limitations of your job?

Working in analytics can be quite demanding at times, as you are required to be proficient in a plethora of applications, ranging from Excel, Access, Power BI, SQL, and Pronto (ERP Software). Coming from a business background, learning the ERP software from scratch was quite challenging. Luckily, my team are super patient, and the company offers plenty of support!

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Don’t worry about your grades too much! There’s so much more to university, and once you start working, there’s no going back. Put yourself out there (volunteering, societies, etc.) and enjoy yourself.
  2. Be consistent! Being a university student can be stressful at times, so make sure to plan your time and stick to it.
  3. Follow your heart! Study what you are passionate about and don’t worry about others. In my first year, many people doubted my degree choice. However, I’m glad I stayed, I love what I’m doing and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
